APRIL 12, 2011

NAASFP is excited to announce that we have just successfully completed the pilot of our new Marathon Coach Certification distance education program. Demand has been high to offer NAASFP programming through a distance education format. The challenge to make this transition is due largely to the fact that our programming is focused on evidence-based training. We believe strongly that we must maintain this protocol in order to ensure the public that NAASFP certified professionals have demonstrated the ability to apply the knowledge safely.

The pilot came to a completion in early April with 25 new running coaches successfully challenging the program. Based on feedback from the participants, the Advisory Committee, and the certification “clients” we know that these new running coaches have the necessary knowledge base to become leaders in the running industry.

The distance education program for the Marathon Coach Certification will feature three components that each candidate must successfully challenge; a Written Exam, a Case Study, and a Practical component in which the candidate must take a real person through a minimum 18 week training program. Successful challengers will be able to use the professional designation of Marathon Coach or Running Coach. The program will come online in May 2011. Stay tuned for registration details.

The core strength of NAASFP Master Trainers has always been that they maintain their own fitness businesses, which allows them to keep on top of trends within the industry and their region. When a Master Trainer facilitates a certification course it is approached with a genuine knowledge and love of the industry.

Effective January 2011, NAASFP will be once again be offering certification only through Host organizations. The demand for privately-hosted sessions keeps the Master Trainers busy throughout the year so NAASFP has decided to return to our original model of providing certification to private organizations only.

If you would like information on how to bring a certification to your region, please visit the Host web page or contact us at registration@naasfp.com.

A dog is tied to a rope that is 15 feet long.

The dog moves to a spot 25 feet away.

How is this possible?

SOLUTION: How is this possible? Stop thinking with limitations. We tend to think within limits, but the beauty of the world is that it is entirely possible that the limitations that we put on ourselves are self-imposed and not necessarily valid.

A classic example of not accepting limitations was eloquently written up in iRun magazine this past month (Issue 5). On page 16 you will find the story of Noella Klawitter, a record-breaking runner who has only 5% vision. Noella, a recreational runner until the retina disease that has cost her her sight set in, began running competitively after losing her sight. Now think…if she had accepted the limitation of being blind and listened to a society that says “How can you run if you can’t see where you are going?” then Noella would not have become the champion that she is and Canada would not have this extraordinary paralympian to be so proud of.

So can you think of all the limitations that you have put on yourself? All the things that you want to do, but tell yourself that you can’t do because you don’t have time, don’t have money, don’t have talent…and on and on. Or what about friends who secretly want to achieve something, but have so burdened themselves with limitations that they just can’t see the way to their dream.

That’s what we love about coaching. We get to show athletes how to set aside those limitations and reach their goals. It is so rewarding and with some clients it is just downright inspirational!

So what is the solution to the riddle? The dog is tied to a rope that is 15 feet long. He is able to move to a spot 25 feet away because he doesn’t have perceived limitations. He moved beyond the 15 feet to discover that the rope wasn’t tied to anything allowing him to go wherever he wanted to.

Five frogs are sunbathing on a log.

Four frogs decide to go for a swim.

How many frogs are left on the log?

SOLUTION: Five frogs are left on the log; there is a difference between deciding to do something and actually doing something!

We love this riddle as it so perfectly exemplifies the behaviour of so many of us - we decide to do something, but never seem to get around to actually doing it. We all know someone like this; maybe even you? How about the soccer player who decides that he needs to work on speed for the upcoming season and when the season in over he is still saying that he’s going to do some speedwork. Or how about the weekend warrior; he decides to run a marathon and then doesn’t do enough training to build the endurance necessary to complete the event.

That’s where we as coaches get to do our thing and help the frogs actually take the leap off the log. Much of it is about motivation – getting the client excited about the goal they’ve set and then keeping them motivated through the challenges of the training required to achieve the goal. The rest is about implementation – having a workable plan that will allow the athlete to achieve her goal. That’s the beauty of coaching. We have the ability to impact someone’s life in a way that is very powerful; we see them achieve their goal, experience success and in some cases become champions. Coaching is a wonderful thing!

Our athletes aren’t the only ones who can miss out on the action necessary to take a decision to a doing. Sometimes we, as fitness professionals, are equally as guilty. Such as when we decide we need a new marketing campaign and months later we still haven’t done anything – although we do have a really great plan!

The secret of the five frogs riddle is implementation. Whether you are the coach or the client, it always comes down to implementation. Without action nothing is going to happen. So whenever you come up with a great idea and then decide that this is the route that you want to go – be it as an athlete or as a fitness professional – remember the five frogs and then leap off the log! Or as Nike has so eloquently coined, “Just Do It!”

NAASFP announces that it has moved its office to Mississauga, Ontario. Based in Chicago, Illinois for the past 15 years, the move follows the purchase of the Academy by Danlyn Group Inc.

With the move comes a marketing campaign for the Canadian marketplace, which has been lacking educational opportunities for fitness professionals who want to specialize in Sport Conditioning. Major centers across Canada will see program offerings grow as the team of Master Trainers in Canada expands.

Rob MacDonald, Founder of the North American Academy for Sport Fitness Professionals (NAASFP) announced his retirement today. After 30 years serving the fitness industry, Rob has decided to trade in his office chair for an Adirondack chair. In conjunction with his retirement, Rob announced that he has sold NAASFP to Canadian-based Danlyn Group Inc.

The ownership transition to the Danlyn Group has been ongoing since early 2009 as the two organizations worked together to create the curriculum for the Academy’s new certification programs.

“I am very proud of all that we have accomplished at NAASFP and am even more proud to have found an organization as passionate about sport fitness to take the helm. When I decided it was time to retire, ensuring that NAASFP continues to move forward became a paramount concern. It is exciting to see the new avenues that we created together be received with such enthusiasm.” Rob MacDonald will continue to work with Danlyn management in an advisory capacity.

New Certification Programs

The North American Academy for Sport Fitness Professionals (NAASFP) is excited to announce their new line of cutting edge Sport Fitness certifications. Since 1995, NAASFP has built a reputation for training the best coaches in the sport fitness industry. The Academy has alway focused on providing accreditation to post-graduates with health/fitness related degrees, but with the surge in demand for sport fitness coaches to the amateur athlete and weekend warriors seeking to enhance their performance, now is the time to bring their premier accreditation programs to the general public.

“We have lengthened the programs and enhanced the detail of the materials to allow for us to continue to provide our assurances that professionals carrying the NAASFP accreditation have received the best training available,” says Founder, Rob MacDonald.

The certification courses are intense and detailed, requiring the candidates to actively participate in the program material and demonstrate their ability to apply the material in a client scenario.

The NAASFP certifications available will be consistent with the current offering, with the exception of one new addition:

Sport Conditioning Coach

Marathon Coach

Sport Conditioning Nutrition

NEW! Sport Conditioning Yoga
